Two weeks ago, my class and I took a field trip to Modern Media Group (MMG) Studios near downtown Tampa.
Prior to this field trip, I researched what MMG Studios was. I was hooked on how clean their website looked, which gave only a glimpse of the high-quality work they put out.
Inspired,I printed out a few copies of my resume and headed to downtown.
When I arrived, the studio mirrored the website perfectly. It had a modern, sleek look that really screamed “modern media.” It was small, but had enough space for multiple rooms to host different services.
Co-founders Cabry Hildmann and Lindsey Marzo both met while studying at the University of Tampa, just minutes away from the studio. Sophia and Alicia, the Social Media Manager and Content Creation Manager, were also graduates of UT.
One thing I enjoyed most about the MMG employees was that they were young, with both of the managers being recent graduates.
It felt reassuring knowing that I was talking to people who had been in the same shoes as me not too long ago.
All of them were also current with how the digital media market was currently operating.
After we got a tour of the studio, we began to do a group discussion. It started off with listening to the workers and then transitioning into a Q&A with the students.
I savored everything they said like a kid eating ice cream in the middle of July. As professionals in my field, it was crucial for me to focus on the material they were sharing.
Both Alicia and Sophia spoke clearly about what each of their roles entailed. This helped me gain a clear understanding on the difference between a social media manager and a content creation manager, which I thought were the same thing prior to this trip.
Aside from talking about their company and positions, they also gave advice about the journey to securing a career.
Some of the advice they mentioned was about interviewing. Even if you don’t get the position at first, the interview is still valuable training for your communication skills in future interviews.
Another topic that stuck with me was the difference between a traditional 9-5 or a more flexible job.
I honestly thought I could do either one, but after this field trip I realized a 9-5 would probably suit me better.
Personally, I thrive best when there is a structure in place, and although I am able to manage my time efficiently, a 9-5 is more up my alley.
Overall, the trip to MMG studios was a blessing in disguise and came at the perfect time for me.
As someone who is about to enter my senior year pursuing a marketing degree, it is important for me to gain as much advice as I can from professionals and build up my network in Tampa.
